UBF7. ciupa / Pixabay The market leading camera company GoPro has recently updated its lineup of actioncams with a new Hero4 model. This new device includes improved 4K video recording and an exceptional touchscreen. But how does it compare with the previous iteration in the GoPro Hero series? Here is a rundown of some of the key features in this camera. GoPro Hero4 vs GoPro Hero3 Old West Outperforms, Buys Undervalued Lockheed MartinOld West Investment Management's All Cap investment portfolio slumped for the year to the end of June, outperforming the S&P 500's loss of 21% and the Nasdaq's decline of 30% over the same period. Writing in the firm's first-half investor update, Joseph Boskovich, Sr. Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Old West, notes that Read More Dimensions There isn’t a huge amount of difference between the two iterations of this device in terms of size. In fact, the dimensions of the devices when not covered by protective housing are both equal to 41 x 59 x 30 mm. Weight The latest iteration in the GoPro Hero range is slightly heavier than its predecessors. However, if you were engaging in an active pursuit such as surfing or skiing, you’ll be extremely unlikely to notice any significant difference between the two. 4K recording This is the first area in which there is a serious divergence between the GoPro Hero4 and the previous iteration in the series. The latest camera is capable of shooting 4K video at twice the frame rate of any other 4K capable camera on the market. GoPro has made 4K video recording a significant focus of its newest device, and it produces outstanding results and fantastic frame rates. HD recording The new GoPro Hero4 shoots 1080p video at frame rates of up to 120 fps. This is superior to the previous model in the series, and it in fact makes it the market leader in this department, as no other current actioncam can match this capability. Slow-motion recording The latest version of the GoPro Hero series enables some extreme slow-motion recording to be captured. The GoPro Hero4 is capable of recording 120 fps footage at 1080p in slow-motion, ensuring that it provides better slow-motion recording than any other actioncam on the market. High video bitrate Bitrates are particularly important for those who require the best standard of video recording possible. The latest version of the GoPro Hero series is offering higher bitrate video recording than the previous iteration in the series, being capable of 60 Mb/s. Audio The microphones which have been included in the latest GoPro Hero4 device deliver an incredible dynamic range, which is nearly double that of the previous model in the GoPro Hero series. Stills Again, the latest version of the GoPro Hero schools extremely well in this department, with the GoPro Hero4 capable of shooting stills at 30 fps. This is three times the level of the previous device in the series, which was capable of a mere 10 fps. Superview The GoPro Hero4 is the first actioncam in the range to be able to shoot 4K or Superview footage. This immersive feature which creates a superior wide angle perspective is ideal for professionals in particular. Protune functionality GoPro has ensured that the latest GoPro Hero4 camera has the capability to utilize Protune when it is shooting in either its still or video mode. This contrasts with the GoPro Hero3, which is only able to use this function when video is being filmed. LCD touchscreen Another innovation included in the GoPro Hero4 is the inclusion of a built-in touchscreen. This is the first time that a camera in the GoPro Hero range has included this feature. Wireless connectivity Bluetooth connectivity has been a real priority for the new device in the GoPro Hero range, and this now supplements the Wi-Fi capability that was included in previous devices. The GoPro Hero three was not capable of working with Bluetooth. Battery One slight niggle about the GoPro Hero camera is that the weak battery life of the GoPro Hero3 has been repeated. According to estimates provided by the company, if you are shooting 4K 30fps video on the Hero4, then approximately 65 minutes of shooting will be possible before the battery needs to be renewed. This is identical to the parameters of the previous device in the series, and will be disappointing to some critics who have suggested that the paltry battery life is a weakness of the actioncam. Price Although the GoPro Hero4 significantly improves on its predecessor in numerous areas, it does it at a premium in terms of price. This new actioncam costs around $100 more than the previous camera in the series retailed for when it was released a year ago. Additionally, the optional Smart Remote will cost an extra $80 to purchase should you wish to take advantage of it. Verdict The GoPro Hero4 is a significant step forward over previous devices in the series, and the only real reason not to purchase it would be if one considers the price tag to be prohibitively expensive. This is great because you no longer have to unmount the action cam to change the battery or memory Hero 9 Black is also the first GoPro camera that can shoot 5K at 30 frames per second. There are some enhancements via the Hypersmooth which makes for smoother footage with the Hero 9 Black. There is also a new Time Warp feature that can speed up long timelapses and a Horizon levelling option as well. Lastly, there are new mods like ultra-wide, max lens, light mod, and display Is Best Overall? It’s clear that the Hero 6 Black is the most powerful overall. It can record the best video footage (which is a GoPro’s primary function), so we can’t help but rank it at the top. It also includes a range of other convenient features such as a touch screen and voice control. Of course, it does have the steepest price tag. The Hero 9 Black looks great for vlogging and can be the best option if you have a budget of $ Is The Best Value For Money? We reckon the Hero 5 Black is the best value for money. It is only $230 and has the second-best camera for recording video. It also has a touchscreen, voice control, and is just an all-around powerful machine. If you can’t quite afford the Hero 6 Black then just get the next best thing at around half the Factors To ConsiderIf portability is essential to you, then you may want to consider the Hero 4 Session or Hero 5 Session. They are noticeably more compact than the other models and can slide in and out of your pocket with ease. And if you happen to drop them into a pool of water they will you’re a diver then the Hero 5 Black and Hero 6 Black are still your best options. Just make sure you invest in an underwater housing system that can handle the pressure. When the GoPro Hero3+ was released a week ago, the question on everyone's mind was what improvements and updates were made to the newest member of the GoPro family. There are quite a few side-by-side comparisons of the Black Editions of the Hero3 and the Hero3+ that test the video and audio quality at different settings of both models, including low-light and SuperView. To see just how much (or little) the performance of the Hero3+ has improved, check out these videos after the jump: The Hero3+ has made some pretty significant improvements and additions with image quality and audio. The image quality is definitely better. Especially in the low-light tests, you can see that the color is less muddy in the Hero3+, with darker blacks and a sharper image overall thanks to a sharper, faster lens. Though you can reduce the curvature in post, the image takes on a more wide-angle look rather than a fisheye look with the SuperView setting, which is a welcomed change for some. You can see more, while reducing image distortion. Possibly one of the more apparent improvements is the longer battery life of the Hero3+, which lets you record for over 2 hours -- about a half hour longer than with the Hero3. The audio has improved as well. With the casing on, the sound is obviously a little degraded, but with it off, the sound is much richer than the Hero3. Users are reporting issues of freezing, glitching, and random shutdowns, though it's uncertain how widespread those problems are. In Rhino's Wi-Fi test, the range at which they were able to receive transmission was significantly less than the 600 feet GoPro advertises, but a lot of factors play into Wi-Fi performance, like your receiver's Wi-Fi capabilities, the number of devices with their Wi-Fi turned on, even the height of the GoPro. Are the changes and improvements significant enough for you, or will you be waiting for the GoPro 4? Let us know in the comments. I either want to buy the hero or my friend's used hero 2. While watching comparison videos, I found that the hero looks better than then hero 2 imo. But with the hero 2 you can plug in an external microphone and I would get it for $100 dollars, rather than the $129 dollar hero. I was wondering anythings I should consider, or your opinions. Thank You!Link for the hero I was talking about (Pocket-lint) - GoPro is king when it comes to action cameras. Those little silver boxes are being put to use by daredevils and extreme sports athletes in places where normal video cameras just wouldn't survive. Capable of shooting high-quality, ultra wide-angle footage, the HD Hero3+ Black Edition is considered one of the best action cameras out there. But how does it stand when put against the latest device to come from GoPro: the HD Hero4 Black has done what it does best and announced a new action camera, chock-full of new video capabilities, features, and oomph. Is the new camera better than the HD Hero3+ Black Edition? Or is it just a modest upgrade? We have put the pair through their paces to find GoPro Hero4 Black Edition offers a max resolution of 4K at 30, 35, or 24 fps with an ultra-wide viewing angle. It also allows 4K SuperView at 25 fps with an ultra-wide viewing angle. Other resolutions available range from and 1440p80 to 1080p120 and 960p120. In other words - if you want the most ultra, highest-quality footage of your stunts - you should go with the GoPro HD Hero4 Black GoPro Hero4 Black Edition is capable of snapping 12MP photos at 30fps in burst mode with a fixed f/ aperture. It also has photo features like time-lapse (going from intervals of .5 seconds to 60 seconds), night photo (going from 10-second to 30-second exposure times), and night lapse (going from 10-second to 30-second exposure times with up to 60-minute intervals).Pocket-lintDanny MacAskill doing his stuff shot with the GoPro Hero4 BlackThe GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition also snaps photos at 12MP photos at 30fps in burst mode with a fixed f/ aperture. It includes a time-lapse feature and night-shooting modes too. You probably shouldn't consider upgrading to the latest GoPro if capturing photo stills is your main concern, as both action cameras are quite similar in this claimed the GoPro Hero4 Black Edition has an improved image quality, with a 2x more powerful processor and 2x faster video frame rates (though GoPro doesn't specify which camera it is comparing the GoPro HD Hero4 Black Edition to).The company also claimed Hero4 Black is the most advanced GoPro ever. If you trust that claims and want the brawniest GoPro action camera available, then go with the GoPro Hero4 Black Edition. Pocket-lint will report back however after we conduct a full review of GoPro's latest camera (and compare it to the GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition).BatteryThe GoPro Hero4 Black Edition features a rechargeable battery. GoPro hasn't elaborated on the size or expected battery life yet. The GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition however has a 1180mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery that is reportedly 30 per cent more long-lasting compared to GoPro Hero3: Black Edition. Until Pocket-lint learns more though, this round can't be GoPro Hero4 Black Edition features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, whereas the GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition only features built-in Wi-Fi. You should therefore choose the GoPro HD Hero4 Black Edition (if connectivity is something that's important to you), as there are more options available to not clear yet what the GoPro Hero4 Black Edition offers in terms of storage, but it does have support for microSD. The GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition supports up to 64GB via microSD. Pocket-lint won't be able to choose a winner for this category until we learn GoPro Hero4 Black Edition features waterproofing up to 40m, HiLight Tag (allows you to mark key moments while recording and then easily playback), automatic low light that adjusts frame rates, high-performance audio, an ultra-wide angle glass lens, and selectable FOV also something new called ProTune, and it brings manual control settings for things like colour, ISO limit, and GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition features waterproofing up to 40m, automatic low light mode that adjust frame rates, sharper images with less distortion, improved audio, among other things. Both cameras are similar in terms of features, though the GoPro HD Hero4 Black Edition offers a bit more (selectable FOV, HiLight Tag, etc). What's in the box?The GoPro Hero4 Black Edition box includes a camera, standard housing, skeleton backdoor, curved adhesive mount, flat adhesive mount, quick-release buckle, and a 3-way pivot GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition box includes a camera, standard housing, Wi-Fi remote and charging cable, quick release buckle, vertical quick release buckle, a curved adhesive mount, a flat adhesive mount, and 3-way pivot and release dateThe GoPro Hero4 Black Edition will cost £ when it releases on 5 October. That's the same price in the UK as the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition, which released last played with the Hero 4 Black already we are mightily impressed with the new camera and can see that your money is better spent on the GoPro HD Hero4 Black Edition. Our full verdict is still out, but from what we've seen so far, we like the performance of the new camera a lot. We think you're better off buying new rather than old in this case. That said, if you already own the GoPro HD Hero3+ Black Edition and are considering upgrading, you should really think about how much you're getting for the price and how important 4k30 is to you. The GoPro Hero4 Black Edition has better video recording capabilities, connectivity, performance, and a few more features. Those bits are plenty enough to warrant an upgrade, but that also depends on your budget and whether it's worth the cost to you. Writing by Elyse Betters.
